Perhaps the best RPG of all time. Innovative, immersive, and addictive. I took about 200 pages worth of notes while playing. I miss it!

Joshua Rodman has rated 9/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Joshua Rodman)

Absolutely one of the most groundbreaking titles in the whole genre, and also one of the most fun.

Nietchse has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Nietchse)

One of the true classics of rpg history with one of the best story lines to ever grace an rpg

Nytemare has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Nytemare)

The first game I bought. Still on Commodore 64. This game is awesome. The best game I ever played and I have played hundreds of games in the meantime. I hope Morrowind will be as good as Ultima IV!

HiddenX has rated 9/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from HiddenX)

with this game the Ultima series became legendary !

DarkFencer has rated 8/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from DarkFencer)

A revolutionary RPG, but also one that does not age well. When Ultima IV came out, it was amazing. One of my favorite games of the time. It had features, and ideas that still influence RPGs today. I tried going back to it a few months ago, and found that the game really didn't age well. For all the morality choices that make the game great, the combat can drag on, as can searching for magic reagents. For those looking to re-live this classic though, you may actually consider the Nintendo (NES) version. Either the cartridge or with an emulator.

Lucky Day Dragon has rated 9/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Lucky Day Dragon)

Great sequal to Ultima III. It was a definite gestalt shift in any RPG format; it brought a whole new paradigm to any gaming. however, I feel the morality system was too works based. It didn't account enough for real human nature and which is why I think many Ultima III players found it frustrating.

Snoekie has rated 9/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Snoekie)

My first rpg ever. And boy was I hooked! One couldn't ask for a better start to get a feeling for what a rpg can be. I clearly remember the thrill I got from exploring Britannia, finding new towns and monsters. Gathering my party, fighting pirates on the shorline and then take their ship after victory to sail the seas off to the magic isle of Magincia. Aaah yes, I've played many, many rpg's since then and none were ever able to catch my imagination like Ultima IV did. Although this new game called Morrowind shows very promising I doubt if I will ever have that special Ultima feeling again. I miss it but also am glad I experienced it.

stravaig has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from stravaig)

I consider this and Ultima III to be the grandaddies of CRPGs. They defined CRPGs. Ultima IV's non-linear story and virtue-based goals (rather than straightforward hack-n-slash goals) remain a shining pillar of what a good CRPG should strive to be.

Nate has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Nate)

A definite classic, a must own for any serious CRPGer.

Tone has rated 9/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Tone)

Ultima 3 hooked me. 4 was all of what made 3 so good with additional gameplay and twists which is a combination which makes a sequel which is better than it's predecessor. Something moviemakers really should learn from.

Mattias Kreku has rated 8/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Mattias Kreku)

I remember drawing map after map after map of dungeons on paper for this game. Walking across the gigantic world for hours on end, trying not to be poisoned by anything and looking for that lost mandrake. I wonder how many hours I have spent immerged in this game? It got boring after a few hundreds (hrmm) of hours so it doesn't rank among the absolute classics for me, but it still rocks.

Nothing like it has ever bean done before or since

Bastich has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Bastich)

Probably the most revolutionary and important RPG of all time. To this day, nobody has topped it IMO. The integration of morality and the depth of it's philosophy was just pure genius. The combat dragged at times, but it could do nothing to hurt the incredible storyline and plot. It is my fondest gaming memory, not just in RPGs, but in all genres...

SergioCQH has rated 7/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from SergioCQH)

For it's time, it was a good game but it does not deserve classic status.

Markus has rated 9/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Markus)

One of my favorite games of the 80s. This probably hooked me into CRPGs for good.

Jacko has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Jacko)

The birth of RPGs as we know them! When games could begin to hold enough space to make the epic stories developers wanted, one game stepped up and provided memorable characters and a story to boot! Any RPG fan that played in the 80's went through every single Ultima game! :-)

Val has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Val)

This game is what role-playing is all about. It made morality and reputation a part major part of the game world. It was refreshing not having to kill a big bad guy in the end to save the world.

Hacki Dragon has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Hacki Dragon)

Stunning idea for a computer game. P.S.: Can't wait for Elijah!

Brown has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Brown)

I gave this a 10 mainly because of it's originality. No big evil wizard or monster to kill. Just a quest to become a better person. Sounds lame but worked perfectly. This game took Ultima from a good RPG series into an undeniable classic. This is also the game that made me wander through school in a haze for a few months, having stayed up playing Ultima 4 all night.

Ultimate Thief has rated 9/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Ultimate Thief)

good Ultima, best among parts 6 and 7

Shyguy has rated 9/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Shyguy)

This was THE best rpg of it's time. It proved a game could be much more than just hack 'n slash, although there was plenty of that, too. The level of detail, the virtues, the huge dungeons, and, of course, Lord British, all combined to create a truly immersive, virtual world...one that I would return to again and again.

capa has rated 9/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from capa)

For its time this was THE game to play and is a true milestone in computer gaming.Looking at the game now it looks terribly dated and its hard to believe I filled an A4 pad of notes on it!(Such is the devotion this game brings out of you once into it)If looking for graphics then obviously look elsewhere but if looking for real RETRO gameplay then give it a go.

Astaroth has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Astaroth)

I remember playing this one on an 8-bit Atari. I had a notebook full of notes and missed lots of classes at school because of this game. Great, great game which will be remembered by many people.

vaticide has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from vaticide)

Still the best Ultima game, and as of yet the best PC RPG.

milos has rated 7/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from milos)

I really liked it the first time, but when I played it again the moral theme started to get on my nerve. Not as much as in asencion, but still.

The Master has rated 7/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from The Master)

Certainly a good game, but really, the later ultimas were better.

not really that great. Very simplistic

plub has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from plub)

no PnP RPG did what this did. Non-linear. Difficult to stay within the boundaries roleplay not just hack and slash. The most important RPG game to call along for awhile. Also helped bring multimedia to computers with use of the primitive mockingboard.

A watershed in gaming ... and in my life :)

OMG ULTIMA4. So much fun it blew my mind. Plus it had the whole karmic/virtue system which was unheard of at the time and almost even today. A definite must play!

Best crpg game ever!

Kranky has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Kranky)

Honestly, the entire Ultima history is a blur to me these days. I blame it on my extracurricular activities in college, but I do know that somewhere inbetween Ultima 3 to Ultima 5, I was introduced to the wonderful world of the Avatar, Lord Blackthorne, Lord British, Iolo and all the other trademarks of the Ultima series. A game WAY ahead of its time. This type of game is standard fare now but no one was trying to make RPGs as ambitious as the Ultima series in the 80's and early 90's. The great days of having to make a bootup floppy for your game to work and having a huge collection of disks because the game was so large compared to the inferior storage technology of the day. What a great game, it was the first time I'd ever played a game where I could get killed for stealing things. Ahhh... the memories.

My first crpg and I was hooked ever since. I'll probably never get that same feeling again. Loved it to bits! And I too filled tens of pages with info :) Supergreat game!

This is still my favourite Ultima, and I've played them all. I must have spent 300 hours or more in this era of Britannia.

Azur has rated 2/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Azur)

Don't think any game has annoyed me so badly as this one. I'd have perfect moral, get in a random fight, smite my enemies with a mighty fireball - and when the first enemies die, the others break, meaning the fireball kills fleeing enemies, and bye bye perfect moral. This happened like 50 times before I quite in disgust.

Played this game back in high school, so that probably dates me. Took me months of playing on my Commodore64 before I beat it without the help of internet forums. Still got the notebook I used to map makes and take notes! I've played a lot of games since then, games that looked better and games that I really enjoyed, but nothing will compare to that game. It had everything a great RPG should have; strategy, tactics, interactive dialog, plot twists and turns. Also it was well paced with it's quests, I never got board or dispaired of figuring the game out. All this on 8bit hardware and 64 kilobytes of memory! This game is highly underrated, and deserves to be much higher on the list.

Ultima 4, Wasteland and The Bards Tale represent a magical time of my childhood. Ultima 4 was spectacular though. The ships! And being humble yet valourous...what a challenge! Awesome game.

The benchmark in immersion and story-telling only let down by technology at its time which i will not hold against it. THIS SHOULD BE REMADE

Ultima 3 and 4 are some of the best games ever written. Rank at the top w/WarcraftII, Starcraft, Diablo2

Vinnie has rated 10/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Vinnie)

The best RPG I played. It was excellent for that time (1985!) I loved the combat engine with the strategic placement of your characters, especially in the dungeon levels. This could still outclass many games today, never understood who would like the combat sequences like finalfantasy 7 which is seen in so many games.. yuck

A must play for any fan of RPG's. I spent countless hours playing this growing up.

Jeremy Chunick has rated 9/10 points (Click here to see more Reviews from Jeremy Chunick)

This was the very first RPG game that my brothers and I had bought in the '80s when it had first come out. Besides the fact that it was cool because it came with a cloth map and an amulet, it was so extensive and seemed to be an open ended world with an awesome storyline. There was nothing like it before or for some time afterwards. This game, for me, is the quintessential RPG and I would still love to play it today, partly because I never did finish it all those years ago
