Another group of MMOG developers joins RPG Vault to chat about gameworld design in Online Worlds Roundtable #8, Part 3. This is part of what Stephane Quilichini, Game Designer, Dark and Light had to say:We realize that gameplay must be the priority of a game, and we have provided players with more than just simple combat scenarios to help advance gameplay - not just to show off technology! We disagree with one commentator who believes that giving over large areas of gameplay (such as building houses, collecting taxes, etc.) to hardcore games can be "suicidal." We believe if that part of the game is well done, it will show the best managers in the player pool, and this will be a real plus for the entire community. My experience as hardcore gamer tells me that in a scripted classical game, some MMORPG players know the game better than the game's creators themselves or, I should say, the possibilities of that game. We hope this happens with Dark and Light players - we will have succeeded if our gamers decide to completely make Dark and Light their very own world. Then, we could create more and more powerful tools to modify that world. |
