The latest review of Diablo 2 - Lord of Destruction can be found at Firing Squad. It#s the most detailed out there I have seen so far, and it rates the game 86%. Here's their final verdict:
We clearly love the additions Blizzard made to the game, if not the changes. Even for players who like to play Diablo II by themselves, the Druid, Assassin and Act V will offer a good 40+ hours of play (should you complete the game with both classes). Those who plan on starting or re-starting on battle.net will be offered even more fun time with the difficulty and skill balance changes. Hell is no longer a walk in the park for the right character; indeed, few characters will be able to take it all on by themselves. Tried-and-true specialization paths like Whirlwind Barbarians and Cold Sorceresses will no longer be the only way to play and win. Immunities, for all their lack of creativity, are going to force different skill choices among players.
Of course, those same balance changes are going to anger many players. Nobody wants to have their old character made weaker - even if everyone else got taken down a notch. The main issue we have here is that Blizzard could have gone about these changes in a smoother fashion, such as the addition of a new, ultimate skill level, rather than the massive adjustment of the current ones. However, as time passes and players re-start with new characters and get used to the changes with the old ones, these issues will lose their significance. |
