You can find a new review of Asheron's Call 2 at RPGVault today. Overall, they think it's a mixed bag what the game offers:
Asheron's Call 2 Fallen Kings is well made, reasonably free of bugs and geared to the casual player who nonetheless doesn't mind paying a monthly fee to play. Everything is designed to keep the gamer involved in actually playing the game, as opposed to recovering corpses, selling loot, restocking supplies, meditating for mana, camping for certain loot or a host of other relatively dull activities common to other persistent state titles. As well, online gaming veterans who are irritated with such drudgery might find it a welcome change of pace.
On the other hand, the very simple character creation and malleable skills systems can make it difficult for someone to get really involved with role-playing, and the extreme ease of play may lessen the feeling of accomplishment for some. Furthermore, although Asheron's Call 2 is a sequel, it has problems common to earlier games in the category. Some examples are insufficient content for high-level characters (i.e. those above about level 35, which is easily reached within two months), lack of housing, a limited chat system and a character inventory system in which finding specific items can be dreary. The older games addressed such issues over the course of years, and it's disappointing to see them revisited in a new one. Overall however, while it's easy to complain about what's missing, what Asheron's Call 2 does offer is an uncomplicated playing experience with very little frustration or challenge, yet plenty of adventure in a new world well worth exploring. Some of us are excluded from playing the game, since you can only register an account if you live in certain countries. For example, you can register AC2 if you are a citizen of Germany, but if you are Austrian (you speak the same language, you have the same currency), you are out of the game. VERY CLEVER. |
