This time, I am the lucky bastard :-). I live in Europe, so I already had the chance to play Arx Fatalis. There hasn't been much fuzz around the game lately in the US (and it isn't out there until August/September), but let me tell you this: make sure you have the $$ when it is released. This is an awsome game, and it is more than the demo promised:

It is atmospheric. It takes a little time to get used to the graphics, because they are somewhat dirty and "asymetric". But once you get familiar, they just fit the theme.
It is rather unique. The dungeon crawl setting is nice. Do not fear that it is just hacking away monsters; Arx Fatalis is full of riddles and quests. Like Gothic, it takes some time to get used to the controls, but again: once you manage them, you know why they were built the way they are.
It is fun and funny. German voice acting is great, and there are moments you'll fall from your chair laughing. And even some quests are outright funny (to talk to a certain person, you have to make him sick so he has to go to the toilet).
AI is great. Just an example: goblins run for help - and they actually come back with reinforcements. There are nicely scripted events galore.

Based on my first few hours with the game, I can recommend it without hesitating a single second. Arkane Studios has delivered. You might say that I am advertising this game. Yes, I am :-). Very much so. If you live in Germany: go buy. If you live elsewhere: preorder - or don't forget to buy it once it is out.
