Gamespy has the eight Etherlords Development Diary online now. It is written by Etherlords Mission Designer Alexander Mishulin and talks about the spell system in the game:

We thought that since the ultimate victory meant capturing the enemy's castle, global spells could probably have to do something with castles. Quite recently, while discussing it we were visited by a guy named Paul who was working on a different project at Nival. He listened for a while and said, well, I see you've made trading card-based war between heroes, why don't you now make trading card-based war between castles? Poor Paul. He must have wished he hadn't have said that, because the moment after, we chastised his obviously raw, inadequate, incompetent idea that would make our difficult task even more complicated. He wasn't intimidated though, and said that, on the contrary, this was the easiest solution, because we wouldn't have to invent anything new ;)
