WAGZ has an interview with Jonathan Key from Irrational Games on their superheroes RPG Freedom Force. Check this tasty bit:
Given the fashion in which many game titles take themselves seriously, what prompted your move to inject a dose of camp into the action and how do you think the gaming community will react?
Well, let's just think about that for a second: "games" and "serious". Do these two things really go together?
Gaming is about having fun and there are many ways of having fun other than improving the fidelity of our arterial blood spray graphics. One of the great things about the Silver age comics is that they can present action and drama without having to include ultra-violence. There's no reason why that can't translate to a modern computer game.
Reconciling these two things has been a difficult problem for us. Just doing a straight copy of the four-colour images would not go down well these days. However, we also want to establish a clear look and feel that is different from the modern comic. There's been a lot of back and forth on this issue but the final look is sort of a compromise between old and modern. I think our character designs are a good expression of this compromise. |
