Homelan talked to Mike Woodroffe from Headfirst Productions in an interview about Call of Cthulhu, their action/horror game with now nearly zero RPG elements. Here's something:
HomeLAN - We know that the Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth will combine action and adventure gameplay. How difficult is it to balance the two aspects?
Mike Woodroffe - Most of this balance is down to how the game is played, if you decide to go into an area all guns blazing then you will bring on more trouble than if you sneak around. The player should quickly learn that they are Jack Walters, Private Investigator, not Rambo, and it is advisable to be cautious at all times. The opening sections of the game are balanced more towards investigation / adventure, with the player gradually uncovering the secrets of Innsmouth. As more of the plot is unearthed, with the player also becoming more familiar with the game controls and game-play mechanics, the level of action increases. We have developed a very poweful scripting language that allows the designers to balance the gameplay very finely as they are playing the game. This balance will be continually tweeked right up to final release. |
