SourceMagazine has conducted an interview with Chris Taylor, the lead designer of Dungeon Siege:

Tell us a little bit about your upcoming game, Dungeon Siege, and why you decided to create it.

Well, we wanted to make something that was very easy for everyone to get into, yet still had the richness of some of the more complex games. I wanted to really blend the two together and bring on some over-the-top action and technology. Some of our goals were that we wanted to have a large, continuous 3D world where you’ll never have to see a loading screen. This is a great fantasy world, and once you step into it, you don’t want to have to go out of it to watch a loading screen that reminds you that you’re playing a computer game. The other thing we wanted to do was to bring back some of the original elements that made playing RPG games, like D&D in high school, like the ability to have large parties. To build a real RGP game, we wanted to give the user the ability to have up to eight characters as a maximum; however, you can still play with only one. We give you that flexibility. Along with this, we wanted to have great depth to the game so as to not alienate the more hardcore, traditional RPG gamers. We’ll be releasing all of our development tools like the Siege Editor, so people can build their own worlds. This way folks can take on more of a DM type of player.
