It seems to be RPG day over at Gamespy, cause they have another article about our favorite genre there: Resident Cynic talks about Dissecting Dungeon Siege, an article about why the game is so successful. Here's a bit:
As I mentioned in my ambition column, trying to revolutionize the world of gaming with your first title is probably a mistake. Dungeon Siege is not a revolutionary title, it's an evolutionary title. This is the right way to go, particularly for a new developer. If you've got sixteen blockbuster titles under your belt then yes, push the envelope. Please. But if you're working expressly on publisher money, and want to recoup it as quickly and efficiently as possible, then you could do worse than to take GPG's example. Find a popular gameplay style (in this case, Diablo), tweak it a bit to add some originality, and you've got something that's already proven to be interesting to a large group of gamers.
