Gamespy has conducted an interview with David Modic, Chief Executive Officer of Sinister Systems, the developers of Mistmare. Here's a bit:
GameSpy: Why twentieth-century alternate Europe?
David: I think the background is sufficiently discussed above, so let me just say this: The time we agreed upon was set in the 20th century Europe since this gives us an interesting world in which the Fog is already a fact of life, but because of its presence the world is developing in different ways. The trade and exchange of ideas between Europe (and within it) is impossible so there is no industrial revolution, there is little scientific progress, the Americas were discovered before the Plague (by the Norsemen), but travel between Europe and that continent is almost unthinkable now. There is no contact between the Roman republic and the Chinese so there is no gunpowder for instance… and so on. The point of the game is not the Fog as such but the developing story about Isador and his ordeal. The Fog is (for the most part) just the background noise, something which has to be taken into account but not really changeable. When we were deciding on the time line we wanted to create a world where everything is back to normal (sort of :)) and moving the beginning of the game 500 years into the future we ensured it. There is also the factor of comparison to be taken into account - the player will be constantly reminded that the places he visits in the game actually exist in our timeline; they are just subtly different because of the onset of the Fog. A lot of info about the game in there, so you might want to chwck it out. |
