|
Al Quadim - The Genie's Curse: 8/10 points |
Immensely enjoyable title from SSI.
I had a ton of fun completing this game back in the day. Graphics and gameplay were at the very least on par or ahead of the time this game was released.
Fun arcade elements in hack-slash combat make this a winner! |
Anarchy Online: 6/10 points |
The game itself is decent, and the interface is quite friendly as well as visually appealing.
The theme and execution of this game is at the very least, pretty well done.
The most major problem with this game is that they are not setting up new servers (and have absolutely no plans to in the future.)
Sure there is lots of bandwidth available in the present RK1 and RK2 servers, but who in their right mind would want to start playing a game ruled by players over 10 times your level.
Economy is already too well established, save your money for Starwars galaxies, unless you're the sort of masochist who likes playing games where almost everyone is literally over 50 times more powerful than you are from the first day you start.

Arcatera: The Dark Brotherhood: 2/10 points |
Darklands wannabe, a crappy game at best give this a miss you're not missing much. |
Baldur's Gate - Dark Alliance: 3/10 points |
Great game with a compelling storyline based on AD&D rules and backdrop.
I absolutely HATED the combat system, and I still hate the combat system in all the baldurs gate games.
Some people really like baldurs gate, but I personally didn't like it all that much and have yet to meet someone who did. |
Black & White: 3/10 points |
semi-decent but repetitive game, put 5 hours into it, and decided I had wasted 5 hours of my time.
Felt a bit like a retarded version of Populous.
If you're into Tamagotchi and other repetitive silly artificial pet type games you may enjoy this.
Don't pay more than $20 for this game new, it's debatably worth $20, but personally I'd save my twenty. |
Bloodnet: 8/10 points |
good gothic/vampire/cyberpunk RPG.
Outstanding elements include being able to create and modify items.
Very slick interface which worked well and was very friendly.
I still own this game today, and load it up occasionally, still almost brings a tear to my eye..:)
Great graphics and sound way ahead of it's time back in the day. |
Buck Rogers 2: Matrix Cubed: 7/10 points |
Classic SSI Goldbox Fare.
HIGHLY recommended to anyone who's even a small fan of Buck Rogers, or the SSI RPG Gold box series of games. |
Diablo: 5/10 points |
Game gets a 10 rating for revolutionary concept and execution, but online play on battle.net was a joke.
Dupers and cheaters pwned this game from the second or third week of launch rendering online multiplayer a total waste of time. |
King's Bounty: 10/10 points |
I am still shocked this day when I meet "old school" PC Gamers who somehow missed this game when it was released.
This is the grand daddy (precursor) to the Heroes of Might and Magic series.
In it's time it was a unique and very fun strategy RPG game (possibly the only one) with graphics and sound on par or better than anything released around the same time.
Highly HIGHLY recommended. Go back to the roots of RPG and PC Gaming with this jewel! |
Neuromancer: 10/10 points |
Based on William Gibson's book of the same title.
This game was visually and conceptually waaay ahead of it's time.
An awesome introduction to the genre of cyberpunk which has been waaaay under represented over the years by PC Game publishers and programmers.
Highlights include surfing the matrix and hacking into various systems.
Strong RPG elements and good storyline development which follows Gibson's book fairly well.
A++++ effort! You should definately try to get a hold of this game and check it out sometime. |
Space Rogue: 9/10 points |
Possibly one of the best Space-based RPGs I've ever played in my 12+ years of PC Gaming.
It has both RPG as well as simulation aspects included in one very nifty package.
Origin Systems was in their prime back then, and this game was no exception from their very illustrious launch list.
Fun gameplay, good graphics, space combat!
Everyone should most definately try this sleeper hit sometime. |
Temple of Apshai Trilogy: 8/10 points |
Back in the day, this was one of the must have RPGs, along with Ultima 2 and 3.
CGA Graphics and Speaker sound are unspectacular but remember this game was running on PC XTs..:) |
Ultima 3 - Exodus: 9/10 points |
Great game, groundbreaking for it's time.
IMO The second best game in the Ultima series ever made. The best of course being Ultima V..:) |
Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos: 7/10 points |
Good game as is most of the warcraft/starcraft series.
Too expensive and a bit too short to drop $50 on, in my honest opinion.
I would pay probably a max of $30 for WC3 and not feel too bad. |
Wasteland: 10/10 points |
Wasteland and it's successor "Fountain of Dreams"
are IMHO two of the best designed, written and programmed games ever.
This is the DEFINITIVE post-apocalyptic nuclear holocaust type RPGs.
Fallout and it's offspring were inspired by Wasteland.
Everyone, I mean EVERYONE who is able to appreciate a good RPG most definately should actively seek out a copy of wasteland and play it from start to finish.
Good graphics, great interface, compelling storyline. Used the Journal style of old to expand the storyline (e.g. read Journal entry #35)
Printed and well documented manuals were almost as rare back then and almost non-existent today.
go wasteland! |
