Sascha Henrichs has written a new Behind the Scenes dev diary at the official Gothic 3 teaser site about modeling the desert scenes:
Hi everyone,

in this article I will grant you an insight into the level modelling for Gothic 3. Since the desert scenery forms one of the three major regions in the game, it makes sense to go into greater detail on it's creation.

If one undertakes to feature a vast desert in a game, the first step would most likely be to learn more about the real thing. After a brief period of research we came to the conclusion that deserts consist of only little more than tons of sand. The sand is given it's characteristic shape by the wind.

These dunes would have been an enormous challange to create poly by poly, thus I came up with an easier way.
Thanks Sem!
