If you ever wondered what engine you should use for an Ultima remake, you should jump over to the lazarus forums and read this most interesting topic...
I was just wondering what are the opinions of the community on the question of which game is better to remake Ultima. The best answer to this would probably be an engine custom-built to suit the game, but if you do not have the time or the skills to make your own engine, what editable game would be the best. I know of four 3D RPG games with editors: Morrowind, Neverwinter Nights, Dungeon Siege, and the upcoming Gothic II. Of the three (since Gothic II has not been released yet) which is the most suitable for an Ultima remake?

Read on here.

A related topic is running on the rpgdot forum.
I'm gonna say remake Betrayal at Krondor with the Gothic 2 engine.. simple reasons being Midkemia was full of forests and the towns have a similar look and feel. There were zones in BoK but they were big enough that it wasn't a feeling of enclosure.

Check it out here.

Enjoy!
