Gamespy has a preview of Warcraft 3 online today. It discusses the playable races, special features and the state of development. Here's a bit about the RPG elements in the game:

In creating the game, the team has added an RPG flavor to the game. Each of the four sides will have heroes. These heroes have stats (strength, agility and intelligence) and a limited inventory that will allow them to carry up to four magic items. Each side can choose any of the three different heroes available to the race. The only limit to the number of heroes is the food cap which all units share. Pardo said that only the first hero will likely be built up to its maximum capabilities because, if multiple heroes are on the screen when experience is awarded, all heroes share the experience. "Many people build their whole early game strategy around their choice of first hero," Pardo said, so the first hero will obviously be the most important.

Heroes cost a large amount of mana stones -- one of the main resources in the game. However, a player can finish the game without gathering a single mana stone. As heroes gain levels, they get more spells and abilities. Heroes are easy to pick out on the battlefield because they are surrounded by glowing lights. If a hero dies, he can be resurrected on an altar. The resurrection only costs gold, not mana.

(Side Note on Resources: In addition to gold and manastones, timber is being added back into the game as a resource. Pardo said it was decided that wood was an important element and needed in the final version of the game).
