Recently, Bartosz Kijanka stopped over at the forums at Planet Dungeosiege to answer a question by Rook (interesting stuff):
Rook - How resource intensive is shooting arrows? If you can shoot someone with an arrow, then you can determine Line of Sight. If line of sight can be done then Hiding and Sneeking can be done. Just how hard would it be and is it already being done? (Slightly edited).
Bartosz - We do indeed have true line of sight. Evaluating line of sight is the basis for many functions in the AI; knowing which enemies you can see, what items are visible on the ground to you, etc. When it comes to combat, ranged weapon attackers will repeatedly check line of sight to the target. If they don't have it, they will maneuver until they do (if you've allowed them to do this via the standing orders.) So, if you get scared and run behind a house, an enemy archer might very well follow you and side-step around the corner of the house to get a good shot at you. Magic users behave in a similar fashion, although some spells don't require line of sight to cast. With regard to efficiency, we managed to do this at a very reasonable cost. |
