RPGVault talked to David Bowman, Creative Director at AE, about character development in their latest Horizons Developer Diary (#3). Here's a bit:
In order to provide the player choice of a skill-based advancement system and the social benefits of a class system, the world of Horizons does not have classes that a character is forced to choose and is then forever bound by that choice. Instead, a player can choose to join a school that provides a minimum of training and equipment. While the character is a member of that school, they are gaining experience in the skills associated to that school. For example, a member of the Warrior school would be gaining experience in the different weapon skills, while a Healer would be gaining experience in the healing skills. This allows players to choose a school based on either the role they wish to play, or the specific skill that they wish to advance. If they wish to try a different role or advance a different skill, the can choose to change schools at any time. Because each school grants special abilities to their members through the magic of the school, and only their members, special abilities granted to members of each school would be lost at the time of the change, but there is no loss to the character's skills. If a player chose to later rejoin a school, they would then regain the special abilities granted by membership in the school. |
