Some more info about our server woes

As you may have noticed, we were offline for app. 3 hours tonight. This offline status was proceeded by a severe server slowdown, but things are back flying again now.

Let us shed a little light on what has happened, and accept our apologies for the inconvenience. Basically, the main cause for the slowdown is that our pageviews have exploded over the last week, mainly because our Morrowind Forum became so popular. When we had app. 50.000 pageviews a day a week ago, we are now testing the 100.000 pageview limit on a daily basis, and without the downtime, we would have surpassed the limit yesterday.

This puts, of course, some heavy load on our server, but it shouldn't be something to bring it down. He should have handled 180 simultanous users without a glitch - but he didn't. We have spotted several possible causes for this, amongst those some problems with the mysql setup here at RPGDot. Myrthos, our tech guy, has spent the night with changing and fixing things - and the result is that things are much better now. We have idle CPU time again, even under high load, and thus we are rather confident that these problems should be gone.

During our efforts to find out what went wrong, we took down the page customization of the news page, the picture of the moment and reduced the number of news and features shown. We will return to the previous state soon, so once again, please excuse that the site looks rather basic at the moment.

In case you wondered why we are reporting app. 10 newsbit a day now instead of 20-30: the news dried out lately (pre E3 time, you know) - it's not that we became lazy :-).

Ok, please keep your fingers crossed that the server will behave now. We will be resuming normal operations shortly.
