Peter Molyneux has parted with his wisdom at the DICE Summit with Gamespy reporting on his presentation in an article entitled The Future of Games from a Design Perspective. While not directly RPG-related, there's plenty of refences to Fable to illustrate his points on game design:Molyneux pointed out something unusual about interactive media: "The great thing about setting something in the real world is that the ordinary becomes the extraordinary," he says. People are amazed when they can do things that they can do in real life, and the game responds accordingly. For example, he talked about his upcoming game Fable, where you're a hero in a world that grows and changes with you. Despite all the complex magical and combat systems that his designers spent months building from scratch, the thing most people who see the game remember is that you can walk around the world and flirt with the townswomen. (Yes, you can even marry them.) People latch on to that; it's familiar and grounds them into the game setting. |
