Gamer's Pulse has posted an interview with Dirk P. Hassinger, VP Business Development at ZUXXEZ about their upcoming game "KnightShift". Here's an excerpt:
GP: What types of difficulties are present when creating a mixture of an RPG and RTS?
Having experience in combining these genres, we have preserved in KnightShift the best and the proven solutions. We have relied on a highly simplified and intuitive construction of the game interface, allowing even beginners to familiarize themselves rapidly with the features of the game and to begin playing without any unnecessary studying of manuals. Another aim was to form a relationship as strong as possible, between the player and his characters. To avoid the impression well known from RTS games, that the characters are mere toy-soldiers, easily replaced by new units, every character in KnightShift is unique, and in the build up of the story the player attaches himself to his characters quickly and permanently. The experience gained by characters, allows them to develop their skills and the equipment gained in battles increases significantly their combat characteristics. Such an approach to the game enables the player to control a small squad, consisting of characters with distinct attributes - this squad accompanies him from the beginning to the end of the game. This allows the player to plan interesting tactics, which can be different in each game, depending on the characters and their experience. Thanks to this approach the game will not be forgotten after the completion of the campaign or the main quests in the RPG mode, but the player will return to it, searching for new methods of solving the problems he faces. | Source: RPGVault |
