Khabal Gaming has a nice feature about the changes between 2nd Edition AD and 3rd Edition AD rules on their pages. This is especially interesting in the wake of the upcoming Neverwinter nights and Icewind Dale 2, since these games will implement the 3rd Edition Rules (they are not the first to do so - Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor tried that before, but failed). Here's an excerpt:
So what’s the difference between 2nd Ed and 3rd Ed anyway? Let’s look at some of the major differences:
1. THAC0 vs AC:
One of the most noticeable changes in the system can be seen in the way Armour Class (AC), or how much protective covering you wearing is calculated. In the old 2nd Ed AD&D, the player’s AC was calculated in relation THAC0, or “To Hit Armour Class 0”. And the lower your AC was, the better protected you were. If you play Baldur’s Gate, you will notice that a person’s AC can go below 0, sometimes reaching –1 or –2!
To simplify things, AC in the new 3rd Ed D&D is calculated in increasing numbers. That means, the higher the number, the better your AC. A side effect of this is that player characters’ AC rating can now reach exceedingly high numbers like 27 or even 30 odd! |
