Neverwinter Nights: Walkthrough, Chapter 1 (Back to contents)
1) Main Quest: The Wailing and the Waterdhavians
2) Main Quest: Helm's Hold
3) The Search for Never's Tomb

The Wailing and the Waterdhavians

This is the main quest of Chapter One. You will hit each section of the city of Neverwinter and end up with some very nice rewards.

The Hall of Justice
You begin by talking to Aribeth. She will be your main source of clues and journal updates for this quest. I suggest returning to her with each item as you collect them. Take the time to empty and refill your backpack and perhaps to pick up a different henchman.

The City Core
A few steps out of the door of the Hall of Justice, you will be approached by a girl named Bethany. She has some issues with the riot in the Peninsula District. Do as she asks, and remember to let her know it's safe after you have returned the Intellect Devourer's Brain to Aribeth and your alignment will move 3 points toward good.

You will also want to check out Trade of Blades if Tomi isn't your ideal choice for a henchman.

Peninsula District: Intellect Devourer's Brain
Make sure you talk to Sedos Sebile at the Peninsula Guard Headquarters located in the NE corner of the district. You will want to show him the Intellect Devourer's Brain before handing it off to Aribeth to complete THE PRISON KEY quest.

There are two ways to reach the Head Gaoler where the Intellect Devourer resides. Completing the TANGLEBOOK ESTATE quest will allow you to enter his office from there. If you chose the PRISON KEY quest, you will go through the front door of the Prison and work your way to the NW corner.

The room is guarded by Kurdan Fenkt, who is a very tough, axe-wielding Barbarian. Once near death, he will surrender to you and spill his guts (figuratively), at which point you can literally spill his guts if you don't mind the negative alignment hit.

Your objective is to kill the Intellect Devourer, but it has a nasty habit of controlling those around it. Try to talk the guards (except the Head Gaoler) into seeing the error of their ways. A sucessful persuade check will reduce your enemies to the Devourer and the Head Gaoler. You might be able to charm the Head Gaoler, but I was never sucessful. Remove him as your talents allow.

Now you've got the Intellect Devourer to face. He is slow, clumsy and ineffective, but takes a heck of a lot of damage to destroy. Keep with it and eventually you'll be left with a smelly Intellect Devourer's Brain soaking the inside of your backpack. The room is filled with some mid-level treasure, so be sure to crack open every container. For those who have Weapon Focus, you'll get a version of that weapon from one of the chests.

Again, remember to bring the Brain to Sedos to complete his quest (worth 100xp & 300 gold). Aribeth rewards you with 500 gold. With the various treasure you've looted, it's a nice lump of change when all's said and done.

Beggar's Nest: Yuan-Ti Heart
Within the Warrens of the Damned (enter through the Snake Cult Estate or Sword Coast Boy's Warehouse) you will need to find the body of TORIN (A Missing Brother quest) and retrieve a copy of the Ancient Key. He is located in a room at the SouthEast corner of the Warrens. You can also find it in Gulnan's Office at the NW Corner, along with Gulnan's Journal.

Use the Ancient Key in the main chamber to unlock Gulnan's Temple.

Gulnan is a level 10 Yuan-Ti Cleric with an HP of 100. Her biggest weapon, however is the zombie generator on the platform. Take that out before taking her on. She has many tricks up her sleeve, including some nasty Flame Strikes, Poison, and Bestow Curse spells. With her high spell resistance and ability to use Divine Power, you will probably need to recall out a few times before being able to wrest that cold heart from her still warm body.

If you take the Yuan-Ti Heart to Harben in the Shining Serpent, you will get a reward based on your Charisma. High Charisma will get 500 gold and a Necklace of Natural Armor +2. Medium get 200 gold and a Short Sword +1. Low walk away with 500 gold. I think everyone gets 400XP.

Once again, Aribeth will drop 500 gold in your pocket for returning another piece of the missing Waterdhavians.

The Blacklake District: Lock of Dryad Hair
Easily the simpliest of the 4 quests, the Dryad is located in Meldanen's Inner Santum. You have two ways into Meldanen's Estate.Talk to Milly in front of her house on the East side of the District. She will direct you to a portal she once used for assignations with Meldanen. Your other option is the front door. This is guarded on the outside by Orrean. You can bribe, persuade or kill him to obtain entrance. Killing him will dump a bunch of guards on you, so you might like that option just for the exercise.

Inside, there is a dim-wittedguy named Grommin. For pity's sake, just con him into letting you through. Of course, you could kill him, but what would be the challenge? Check out the whole floor either now or after you've finished for some nice loot, including Dragon Blood and Linu's Silver Chalice of Moonbow.

You'll find Meldanen's Inner Sanctum by going through the west corridor and through Meldanen's Apprentice. Watch out for traps on the stairs down.

Once inside the Inner Sanctum, you'll have to approad the Dryad before Meldanen shows up. Beat him up and he'll surrender to you. At this stage, you must chose how you wish to proceed. Your options are to free the Dryad or kill her for the Lock of Dryad Hair. And what shall you do with the wicked Meldanen? Kill him and take everything he has, including that wonderful Staff of Meldanen? Make him cry uncle and watch as he yanks the Silver Tooth (Formosa's UNREST Quest) from his own mouth? Extort money and promise to betray Formosa for additional gain? Ah, decisions, decisions!

Another 500 gold is waiting for you when you deposit the Lock of Dryad Hair in Aribeth's palm.

The Docks District: Cockatrice Feather
Another choice of entry points will lead you to the Cockatrice in the Aqueducts. Within the Silver Sails, there is a door which will require Dara'nei's Locket to open. You can find her locked in a room two floors down in the Seedy Tavern. The other option to use the Orders from Callik (found in Callik's House) to get through the gate inside a concrete bunker south of Androd's Estate.

Charon awaits you to transport you to the sewers. You'll face Callik and his croonies who are an easy challenge. Don't forget to grab the Masterson Family Amulet and the Fairy Dust from Callik's body.

You can see Vengaul through the fence, but you have to go around to reach him. Really nice people can talk to him and just get the Feather, but for the rest of you...kill everyone and grab the Cockatrice Feather from the crate that Vengaul unlocks before fleeing for his miserable life. Vengaul got away everytime I tried to kill him.

BEFORE YOU return the Cockatrice Feather, (or whichever is your 4th and final Waterdhavian item), finish the rest of your Chapter One quests.

When you are all done rollicking with the playmates in the Moonstone Mask, dumping the trash for a few coin, creating that PERFECT magical weapon with Marrok in the Shining Knight Armors and Armor, head on back to Aribeth and she'll begin the next part of your quest: HELM'S HOLD.
