Avault has done a very detailed review of Arcanum - Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. Their rating is 3 1/2 stars out of five. The especially liked the game's intelligence:
Arcanum's specialty is its intelligence, depth, and scope of play. During non-combat situations, the characters in the game react to you intelligently, based on your appearance, mannerisms, and even your reputation. Actions you perform early on can thus have a significant effect on events and characters later. There is just so much to do and say in Arcanum, that it can be overwhelming at times. Thankfully, there is usually more that one way to accomplish a task, and experimenting with the more interesting choices is part of the title's appeal. There are, however, many scripted events which occur regardless of your choice of character. I was hoping that the characters in your party would act more independently than they do; they have little personality outside of their scripted actions. Most of Arcanum's difficulty lies in getting used to the interface. Once that's accomplished, the game itself has three difficulty settings related specifically to combat. Damaging blows to your opponent is more likely on the easier setting, and your character's health in combat becomes more tenuous with the harder option. The vast environments are filled with ample challenges, quests, and fights to whet any RPG fan's appetite. |
