Thanks to Gorath from our hosted site GothicDot for sending along word that Gothic II has scored a rating of 91% in the review of German print mag PC Action. The review will be published in the next issue of the mag (12/2002) which will be out next week.
Gorath spotted the news over at excellent German fansite World of Gothic (so thanks to them as well :)).
There are also rumors about a playable demo floating around which might be included with the mag's cover DVD or CD. World of Gothic has contacted PC Action regarding the matter and is currently waiting for an official statement.
Our German readers should follow the link above to World of Gothic for a short overview and quotes from the review. Our English readers... well, you're screwed *eg* - Hehe, not really.
Here's a short summary. PCA is first listing game facts:
- 6 epic chapters
- 5 professions, 7 talents
- No level cap
- Over 50 spells and monsters
- More than 150 melee and ranged weapon types
- Several ways to solve puzzles
- Genuine AI with "memory function"
- Captivating plot
- Spoken dialogue
- Day and night schedule, weather effects
Next up is a listing of pros & cons:
+ Huge game world, 3x larger than in Gothic I
+ Great, immersing graphics
+ Excellent voice acting
+ Simple Controls, even when it comes to inventory management
+ Intriguing story
+ Lots of freedom
+ High replay value
+ Excellent enemy-AI
- High difficulty
- Limited character development
- Only one slot for weapons & armor
Here's the comment from reviewer Tanja Bunke (sorry, not easy to translate *g*):You know it's time to quit playing when your cat walks up to you with a can opener and a can of cat food in its paws. Well, easier said than done in Gothic II's case: An intriguing background story, challenging puzzles, tough fights - Gothic II delivers it all. In abundance. It doesn't happen too often to me that an offline RPG gets me hooked up to it so much that I do even forget about sleeping. Conclusion: Gothic II is as addictive as it gets!
Then there's a box with ratings and some short final words:
- Bang for the buck: 93 %
- Controls: 84 %
- Graphics: 87 %
- Sound: 88 %
- Multiplayer: 0 %
- Single Player: 91 %
Final Words: "Excellent – This RPG is a must for everybody's wishlist!"
Well, looks like Gothic II has kept its promise of becoming a worthy successor of one of the best RPGs of all times. It's very relieving that there is no word on bugs in PCA's review. Those of you who got Gothic I early will probably have some unpleasant memories...
