RPGDot Game Rating Machine

Lachlyn has rated the following games:

Blade of Darkness: 8/10 points

I like this game...right away, the graphics and lighting knocked me out. I did not finish it, so can't comment on overall. Got stuck pretty solidly at some places, that could be better. I expect to go back for another go. Pity the developers disbanded:(

Dark Age of Camelot: 9/10 points

I like DAoC quite a lot. I came from an EQ addiction, and most things in EQ that really annoyed me are deliberately rectified in DAoC. Plus I think the graphics are more realistic, less 'cartoony' than EQ. It started out running flawlessly, and has had very few burps. Whereas EQ, even after 3 years is still a buggy mess. Six zillion patches do not a Masterpiece make. I still play EQ, but I prefer DAoC. EQ has more depth now, but I put that down to the time they have had to insert content. I fully expect DAoC to grow as it goes. I happen to enjoy the RvR aspect too...taking keeps, and battling enemy realms of PCs. I played DAoC since it game out, and I am just now approaching Level 48, but that is because I made too many characters. Right now I still don't feel I will be bored at 50, as some are...but we shall see. Given the current choices available, this is where I prefer to go online with friends. Excellent game, Mythic.

Dungeon Siege: 8/10 points

This game had a lot of hype preceeding it. My impression of it is that it is a prettier Diablo. Same pure hack-n-slash addictiveness, but nicer scenery and chars. I like the music too. Good that you can play online with a friend or three. One thing that annoyed me was that you couldn't bring your view of distance ahead up to full horizontal. So I guess I have minor view issues. Still, I consider this a nice enough game, that is fun playing. Not been hugely addictive for me, but I go back and play it and enjoy it.

Elder Scrolls 3 - Morrowind: 10/10 points

Morrowind is quite simply THE best game I have ever played. No game can ever be perfect, but this game satisfies and delights on more levels than any I have yet encountered. Giving it a number grade, I would say 98. A point off that it is not MMORPG bliss...imagine MW Online!!!... and a point off for character bodies that are a bit 'wonky'-looking. Other than that, the world, the story, the beauty totally captivated me. Depth and breadth and freedom to do anything you want...superb! The Mod files add a delicious icing to an incredible cake. Yes, I am aware of shortcomings here and there that others take issue with, but the Journal is getting a fix in Tribunal, and the game runs fine on my rig. For me, Morrowind is an absolutely stunning achievment in gaming.

EverQuest: 7/10 points

This one is tricky to write...I have 2.5 years of EQ addiction, and it is a very bittersweet saga. For a time, it was the only major 3D MMORPG out there...it had the market cornered if you wanted 3D social interaction online. But it was "THEIR World", and that always came across in their attitude to their customers. One time, straight out from the Head GM on my server! We were the suckers paying them, there were no other choices, and they had a cocky antagonistic attitude that grated badly. Their "Vision"(TM) for the game, their definition of 'challenge', I always found to be steeped in sadism, from Day One. The things they made players endure, you just knew they were sitting at their GM screens laughing at you. Yet still I played...'only game in town'. It was not until DAoC gave them strong competition that they made ANY changes focused on making the game more fun and more bearable for the players. Yes, they dumped in LOADS of content, expanded their world, made money on each expansion...but to this day, it is STILL far more crashy/laggy than it should be. Maybe they just don't have the best programmers...maybe they reach too high...I don't know. I just know that with all the money they have made off EQ, programmers and servers really should be the very best. I always felt the game to be fantasy, in a cartoony sense, but with Shadows of Luclin it got even more so. Your Avatar IS you in game, and lot of them have some incredibly stupid animations. My Barb Warrior (female) runs like she has polio! No, on art and technical functionality, EQ missed the boat. (HAH! Boats...another joke.) I like what they tried to do, and for many it may satisfy...but for me, the longterm familiarity has bred a certain amount of contempt for Verant. They based the game's premise on greed, and it feels almost like a casino when you enter it. From the Bazaar to the beggars, from Ebay to Uber Guilds, the stink of avarice strongly marks EQ. So for me the experience was a very mixed one. I still have my accounts and my friends there, I play occasionally, but it is no longer where I prefer to be.

EverQuest - Shadows of Luclin: 6/10 points

Personally, I don't see what impresses about the Luclin expansion. Yeah, new areas to explore, but most aren't very appealing. New char models...which I have mixed feelings on. (Thundercats..?!!) I will say the higher polygon faces, and the ability to change them, are good. Not sure I think 'going to the moon' was an appropriate direction for EQ. But, hey..."IT'S THEIR WORLD", and we are just the ants.
