ActionVault has a Call of Cthulhu dev diary written by Andrew Brazier from Headfirst Productions, makers of Call of Ctulhu - Dark Corners of the earth, a game that seems to be more and more action oriented and less and less RPG. because of its setting, we will continue to report about it, but don't expect too much roleplaying in it. Here's a piece of the shortie:

We also made another decision very early on which has had a major influence on the development of the game - this was going to be a horror game, and we wanted the player to feel as immersed in the environments as possible. To this end, we decided that the game was going to be first person perspective (as opposed to the horror standard of third person, as seen in games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill and Alone In The Dark). We felt the tension was always spoiled somewhat if you could see more than the character you were controlling could see - it also creates a bit of a detachment from that character which can mean that you don't really relate to them or build up any empathy for them. When your guy dies in Resident Evil, it is nothing but an annoyance because it means you've got to play a load of the game again. We want players to actually 'care' about the character Jack in our game, to want to preserve his life and not feel he is expendable. To do this, you have to feel that you ARE him as much as possible. The first person viewpoint helps you to do this, as does the fact that there is no interface on the screen distracting you from what you can see.
