IanStorm offers an interview with the dev team about Realms of Torment, their upcoming MMORPG. Here's a little something for you:
Atrox: Often times in MMORPGs, players gain fame, and sometimes infamy in the communities to which they belong. Sometimes through development team design, and other times just by the impact they have on the game world. In what way could players in RoT expect to gain that often sought after notoriety?

RoT: I think the fame point system will come strongly into play with this in many ways. I'am sure plenty of outlaws will spring up all over the game world and this is perfectly fine. In fact, there will be towns that cater to this type of lifestyle in the game world. However, because the penalties for living this way are harsh, a player that is able survive and prosper while living as a outlaw or well known "murderer" will gain much notoriety. The more infamous a player gets in this way, the more challenging it is to stay alive and the more well known he or she becomes in the world.

Other ways of gaining notoriety is with higher ranks in the world such as realm ruler or king. With these titles comes privileges that will only be available to the few that were able obtain them during their lives such as controlling NPC armies in battle.
