TFH Gaming and The Wargamer have reviewed Arcanum - Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. The review at THF Gaming isn't enthusiastic at all, mainly because of the graphics, rating the game 3.5/5. Here's their summary:
Arcanum is the best pure computer roleplaying game to arrive since its post apocalyptic forebear; every serious computer roleplayer or those with fond memories of Fallout will be endlessly pleased with its various character options and gameplay. It's a shame the dated graphics may cause more casual gamers to pass it over. Those who can get past the graphics will find an involving RPG experience with endless possibilities and an immense measure of replayability.
The Wargamer is more positive in tone, but doesn't give a rating:
Arcanum unfolds like a delicious nostalgic journey through the history of the genre, touching deftly on some of the finer points of its successful predecessors. Like a good literary series, it draws you in chapter by chapter, as opposed to overwhelming you with snappy graphics and "slim-fasting" the plot. It's not perfect, and suffers in several key areas (most notably the difficult interface and inventory management system) but it's a sure bet you'll keep coming back for more of this gourmet role-playing experience until it's finished-perhaps several times over. |
