Begining an MMORPG can be a daunting prospect for the uninitiated. Living another life as an elf or a superhero sounds like a pretty swell way to kill some time, but then there are all those horror stories. "World of Warcraft made me bomb out of college," or "playing Final Fantasy XI is like paying someone to let you work a second job," or "EverQuest will make you forget about your friends and family and you'll become a shriveled, empty husk of a human being and die alone while camping orcs." It's kind of a turn-off. Nobody looks at a long time heroin addict and says "Gee, that looks like fun. Let me try some of that." It's easy to overlook the fact that when taken in moderation MMOs can actually be fun without devouring anyone's life and spitting out the bones.
