RPGDot 2003 Awards: Best Graphics in an MMORPG
MMORPGDot Team, 2004-01-08

The last couple of weeks you could vote for the best RPGs and MMORPGs that have been released in 2003. Not us but you the player decide who receives the RPGDot 2003 Awards in the various categories. We thank all those who entered their votes and helped us in making it possible to select the best games of 2003.

Best Graphics in an MMORPG

Graphics, some need the best looking game out there and some couldn't care less. But this is not about how good the game is, this is about how great it looks and how stunning it is at times.

The winner: Star Wars Galaxies - An Empire Divided
One thing that very few players have complained about in SWG was its graphics. Certainly one of the best looking MMORPGs so far, it lives up to the Star Wars legacy in letting players travel in distant but familiar landscapes. From the rolling sand dunes of Tatooine, to the lush grass plains of Naboo, down to the forests of Endor, the game displayed a vast array of colourful and highly varied environments. SWG's characters also showed off the game's highly versatile graphics engine by allowing players to create truly unique avatars. No two players have the same exact look in SWG's world, and that's saying a lot!

Runner Up: Final Fantasy XI
Star Wars Galaxies looked better. No doubt about that. But the graphics in FFXI are solid, convincing images. Considering the game is almost two years old at this point, the visuals have aged remarkably well. Character animations, Mob designs, and spell graphics all combine to make FFXI a shiny, shiny game.

Second Runner Up: Dark Age of Camelot - Trials of Atlantis
In addition to the stellar content additions of Tales of Atlantis, the graphical improvements this expansion added onto the already laudible Dark Age of Camlot made it a worthwhile purchase. Improvements such as the SpeedTree visualization system, reflective water, and improved terrain texturing made DAoC a must-have expansion for players.
