It seems that the trend to paying for content continues: Gamespot will become a pay site in May. Not all of their content, mainly the archives and the access to screenshots and downloads, but nevertheless, access will be restricted to paying users. Here's what they will still offer for free:
1. The last seven days' worth of content. This includes all story types (previews, news, reviews, and so on), except for downloads and video streams.
2. The last seven screenshots for each game, as well as every page in the screenshot index.
3. One movie (streaming version) per game.
4. GameSpot Live's 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week streaming video service.
5. All cheats, hints, codes, and FAQ pages for every game, as well as real-time pricing information.
6. Reader reviews and score submissions (excluding text-review submissions). Rend's comments: As sad as it may seem, the move is quite understandable. If you have a big site with lots of overheads, you need to pay staff, bandwidth, servers. Biggos are still losing money from their sites, since advertising doesn't pay what they need. However, I doubt that many people will use the extended service where you pay for. Our own observations are that people are not willing to spend a buck for an online newssite, while they certainly spend some of them for printed magazines... |
