PC.IGN have posted the first part of an interview with Ion Storm's Warren Spector. It's somewhat similar to yesterday's interview at Gamespy, covering topics like innovation and development on the Xbox. Here's an excerpt:IGN: Continuing on the theme of innovation, the PC platform has introduced plenty of novel ideas into the gaming world, whether it be online play, graphical innovations, etc… With the crossover of PC and console games, and number of ports steadily increasing -- especially with the Xbox -- do you think that we'll see a decrease in terms of innovation as developers try to cater to a more console-friendly market?
WS: Well, consoles introduced a whole new set of interesting constraints, I guess, on development. It's great knowing exactly what kind of hardware a player has on his or her desk, or table -- that's great -- but you also have the limitations of memory and all that stuff. And you can't count on the player to buy a faster system, or more memory, or a better graphics card. That, I think, is going to hold people back a little bit, just the fact that you have this locked-in platform.
But the real thing about consoles that i think has the potential to hold things back is just the barrier to entry of development. You have to be an official developer; you have to buy expensive development kits; you're not just competing with a bunch of shareware guys. There is no indie console movement in the way that there's a mod community on the PC side, or shareware. There's no equivalent. Perhaps it's just my reading of it but in the Gamespy article he seemed to say that innovation comes from the console market but in this interview it seems to be reversed... |
