Elder Scrolls 3 - Morrowind: 5/10 points

So - I started this game and at level 1 it was rather difficult. After getting to level 3 or 4 I started some random quests. At one point I was told I need to explore more of the world before I would be given the next quest so I started walking across the map. The next thing I knew by level 8 I had the best items in the game (learned this after the fact) and the combat aspect was totally mundane. Eventually I went back to get a few more quests but they were all rather boring and I gave up. None of the puzzles seem to require much ingenuity to solve. They all seem to be of the form - go to some random place you never heard of before and find this [item/person/whatever] and [talk/kill/deliver/buy/]. Yada Yada. After a while I found it boring. The graphics are ok (though I prefer wizardry outdated engine to this). Anyways, as single player games go I think there are better options such as gothic, wizardry, thief, and so forth. This game does allow mods and such so people who like design aspect will find this game more enjoyable than most of the ones I listed but I really found the quest aspect of this game mundane and one dimensional. I rarely give/subtract points for graphics unless they are horrible (making the game difficult to play) or spectacular (aka nwn). I mention this because a lot of folks give this game a good score for the graphics alone.

Neverwinter Nights: 6/10 points

This game had a lot of potential. The graphics are wonderful as is the scripting engine and ability to add your own modules. Before i begin let me express my bias against the overhead camera angle of baldur gate/icewindale/nwn series. The supplied single player version has the flaws of being rather short, lacking in depth and just plain boring. The multiplayer version suffer from numerous client/server bugs. The communication protocol often gets confused during modest packet lost (an easy thing to fix if these guys would get their act together) the async behavior between server/client update (the client will move you independent of the server and then correct when it receives a server response) is nerve wrecking at best and frequently leads to unwanted deaths. The code is horribly unoptimized and leaks memory like a pig (500mb to 1gig memory leak in 3 days is a bit painful) yada yada yada... Most of the above complaints are technical in nature but they make a potentially very good game engine (ignoring my bias on overhead view) rather frustrating at best. Worse, many of these problems are trivial to solve (esp the server/client interaction) and memory leaks. Having said all this - the graphics are very nice :)

Wizardry 8: 9/10 points

After playing the MM series (5-7) I moved on to this game. I had never played the earlier versions (and probably never will) and found this game quite enchanting. At the lower (player) levels it seems quite well balanced - though as players level higher (23+) balance seems to fall away (esp when comparing magic to hand/hand combat). However, this is very near the end of the game and not so bad. The 'quests/puzzles' are rather enjoyable (I rather disliked baldur gate type quests). The game has a few flaws: a) The engine is not data driven (aka you can't add mods or fixed the current database easily) b) The graphics are a bit dated (I find this rather minor but other complain) c) The game is clearly unfinished (many areas/quests were never implemented). C is understandable given the company history (aka they went bankrupt) but still an obvious flaw d) The game is a bit hack/slash (I don't dislike this but others will) but has a good mix of puzzles/quests. I wish there was a new version that had nwn scripting ability/area builder but used this sort of engine (party based and perspective). I'm not a big fan of nwn overhead perspective and I strongly dislike nwn multi-player implementation (the async behavior between client and server is one big pain in the ass along with all the bugs). Anyways, a very enjoyable game for those who like the mm series - probably not as enjoyable if you are a big fan of baldur gate.
