A new Glimpse Inside has been published at the official site for Earth & Beyond. This time, they take a look at motion capturing in the game:
Gone are the days when game avatars stand fixed in place, staring straight ahead with their arms at their sides. Avatars in Earth and Beyond will display a range of movements and emotions, and your own character will be able to perform a wide variety of gestures, expressions, and movements.
But where do those movements come from, and how do they get in the game? It's a complicated process, and as you might expect, it begins with live actors. We sat in during a recent motion capture shoot with David Washburn, Westwood's Motion Capture Supervisor, to find out exactly how the process works.
"Motion capture is essential in game making, so the subtleties of human motion can be portrayed in character animation," David said.
The goal of the session is to capture new animations, and redo some old ones, for female avatars. This requires a female actor, so Westwood hired Elena, a dancer, circus performer, and gymnast who is native to Russia and now works in Las Vegas. |
