Another review of Square's 'Final Fantasy XI' for PS2 can be found at Video Game News today. There is no numerical rating but instead the editor recommends renting or loaning the game. When you pop the new PS2 Harddrive into your favorite console, images of speedy game play and fast load times shoot through your brain. "Ah yes... I will be able to load games directly off the harddrive and be playing like the olden days of cartridge based gaming." It's a nice dream...
Unfortunately, from the moment you turn on your PS2 to the time you get into a game of Final Fantasy XI, you have to wade through 14 option screens. From titles, to legal disclaimers, to character selection, there are no less than 14 screens you need to approve EVERY SINGLE TIME you press power. There can be even more than that if you made the mistake of not logging out properly when you played last time. This can be easy to do because logging out requires that you wait 30 seconds and go backwards through no less than 10 screens, many with loading times. Yes I counted. In the history of gaming, I've never seen anything like this... It's absolutely horrible. Sony or Squaresoft, or whoever needs to come up with a better system of getting in and out of the game without going through this torture... |
