It’s an uphill battle nowadays to introduce a new massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) to the market and actually see it obtain success. There’s just too many of them. Not only are they all pretty similar in the most basic characteristics (you’ve got different classes, some magic spells, skills that upgrade, you attack the small critters over and over again at first, etc.) but to play one is to invest a substantial amount of time into building up your character’s skills. To switch to a new game then, is to admit to having wasted a bunch of time. Developer Gamasoft seems to have had its heart (does a company have a heart?) in the right place when they created RYL: Path of the Emperor. Unfortunately the biggest thing holding it back from success is, ironically, its current lack of success.
