RPGVault has posted part two of their article on character customization in Pirates of the Burning Seas. This part details some of the necessities and obstacles involved in creating character models and preparing them for animation, or "modeling and rigging" (sounds appropriately nautical, doesn't it?).
The task of modeling characters is rather complicated because it crosses multiple disciplines and requires extensive knowledge in each one. That's why character creation, in general, is usually a task tackled by multiple people, especially in the film industry. In games, however, where budgets are lower, these disciplines are expected to be mastered by one individual and is seldom the case.
Some of those disciplines include:
- Concept Art / Character Design
- Human Anatomy
- Texturing and UV Layouts
- Shaders & Lighting
- 3D Modeling
- Rigging
- Animation
