The second Atriarch Q&A with Lead Designer Serafina is online at Atriarch Vault. Here's a bit:
Question 3) Synon: I've got a question about world modification. When digging, will you physically need to move the dirt to another location or does it just disappear as you dig?
Dirt will not disappear. Which means you could probably make yourself a nice living as a dirt hauler. Things in Atriarch are physically in the world. That means the terrain and dirt are also physical things in the world, not just there for looking at, but for touching too. So, if you want to dig a hole, you are going to have to figure out how to lug the dirt out of your way or do something else with it.
Our goal with Atriarch is maintain as much realism as is fun. In other words, we don't want to make something real at the expense of it being really, really un-fun. Of course, what is considered fun will forever be up for debate. Why do I bring this up at this point? Because a feature like digging hasn't been tested yet in an online world environment. If it turns out to be the biggest gameplay nightmare of all time, we will modify the feature to make sure it doesn't make the game un-fun. This is one of those Atriarch features (there are a few others) that I'm really excited about and am hoping will turn out great, but I'm also leaving the door open just in case it doesn't play quite the way we expect. |
