Rumors at various places (mostly fansite forums) are running wild about LucasArts breaking up with Sony Online Entertainment as far as development of 'Star Wars Galaxies' is concerned. That definitely seems a little far-fetched as this new job opening at the LucasArts website for a Senior Director position does indeed mention "a newly created business unit revolving around the Star Wars Galaxies line of products" but it also still mentions an "external" or "outside" developer.
The splitting-up rumor originated from someone who claims to have insider knowledge via someone who is supposed to be a semi-regular contributor to the TheForce.Net website and is also supposed to have contributed a couple of articles to Star Wars Gamer.
However, the person responsible for the Star Wars game news at TheForce.Net (or the person who claims to be responsible for the news there ... kinda hard to confirm ;) ) posted at the official 'Star Wars Galaxies' forums that he has never ever heard of anything that might even hint at a Lucas - SOE divorce.
Well, it very much looks like someone just built his own little tale from that job ad to get attention or something like that... so fact is that Lucas is obviously building a new business unit for SWG. Why? I would personally assume that LucasArts is looking to improve its cooperation with SOE in order to operate the game more effectively.
For example, at this time, it seems like SOE can not even move key Star Wars characters like Darth Vader or Luke Skywalker without permission of LucasArts *and* LucasFilms which obviously makes live events or any "real" Star Wars content sort of hard to manage.
My guess (hope) is that LucasArts is simply planning on making the approval process less painful and on making it easier for SOE to deliver the "Star Wars-y" content that players have been asking for for a long time. |
