Arcanum - Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura: 9/10 points |
Arcanum is an almost-classic, a game with some truly great elements and some so-so elements. The combat system is the weakest point: it was poorly balanced and only occasionally fun. The character system also has some balance issues (like technology being pathetic) but I really liked the concept of magic vs tech emphasis. However, this game has one of the best backgrounds and settings of any game yet released, along with the strong FallOut style flexibility and a good quest system. I'd love to see more games set in this universe, with an upgraded graphics engine, character system, and combat system. |
Fallout - A Post Nuclear Adventure: 10/10 points |
FallOut is the best role-playing game yet produced for the computer. Diablo is a better action-RPG, and some of the Baldur's Gate and Might & Magic games are better for character building and party based combat, but FallOut is still the best at delivering actual role-playing: fight your way through, sneak past the baddies, or talk your way out of trouble: most major events in FallOut had multiple options. Plus FallOut has the best flavor of any RPG - the incredible intro video, the truly cool retro-future manual, and the great black-comedy touches throughout the game, make it my all time favorite RPG. |
Quest for Glory 1 - So You Want to be a Hero?: 9/10 points |
An underappreciated classic, especially the upgraded Windows version. A very light game, but a nice blend of RPG and adventure elements, with some action thrown in. Its strength is its classic story-book fairy tale plot, and a sense-of-wonder attitude. |
