There is a new Glimpse Inside at the official Earth & Beyond site. It talks about character animation (motion capturing), and it's the second part about this subject. Lete us present you a short snippet:
After he has the 3-D file, David begins taking a close look at the movements that were captured from the actor. At this point, the data on his monitor looks much like a three-dimensional connect-the-dots drawing of a simplified human skeleton. The dots represent the reflective markers (those little silver balls we showed you in Part 1) that were carefully positioned on the actor. Ideally, each movable "bone" in the skeleton will have three markers attached to it, to give it the feeling of natural movement exhibited by the actor. (Players will never see the skeleton inside each avatar, but it's there).
David studies the motion closely and makes changes where needed. He can reposition the markers slightly if needed, or even add "virtual" markers. (This might be helpful, for example, if he were merging the movements of two different actors into an animation for one avatar). |
