The second part of the Restricted Area interview at RPGVault is online now. They still talk to Managing Director Jan Beuck:
Jonric: Why did you decide to use a random area generator? What are the advantages and disadvantages? What guidelines have you built into it make sure it produces the kinds of levels you want?
Jan Beuck: A good question! The disadvantage some may fear is that they can be boring and look always the same. Or they can be illogical in a way that hurts. And it's harder to create a program that creates the levels than to create them yourself.
But lets come to the advantages. This way, even we have fun to play the game, although we made it! Uhh - sorry, wrong answer... random levels can provide replay value unlike anything else! If you played though a game with static levels, it will become boring to play it again very fast, even if it has cool levels and outstanding gameplay. But if you don't know what's behind the next edge, what's in the next room, which color the light will have in the next corridor, which monsters await you - then you can enjoy the game as long as you wish!
Nowadays some developers even advertise with "handcrafted levels" - as if this wouldn't be the oldest and most basic stuff in the world! |
