Leakfree.org has an interview with the VP of Development at Smiling Gator about their post-apoc MMORPG, 'Twilight War: After the Fall'. Here's a big snip:
Give us a brief overview of Twilight War: The Fall, and tell us how this game will be different from other MMORPG's we've seen.

“Brief”? Haha…that will be difficult, but I’ll try. TW takes place in our vision of Earth’s post-apocalyptic future. In the late 21st century a recently united Earth is devastated by a war with an alien race called the Skel (who were seeking a new home world), a war that over the course of several years utterly destroys civilization and most of Earth’s inhabitants. This massive “Doomsday War” was halted by an event that destroyed most of the soldiers on both sides: the de-orbiting of the asteroid-size Skel ship dubbed Nemesis by the people of Earth. Survivors later called this catastrophic event The Fall, which caused the melting of the north polar ice cap, among other things. Two centuries after, remnants of Humanity, a new breed of biogenetically and radioactively altered “Mutants,” and the descendants of the Skel fight to survive in a hostile world. Skirmishes are fought over scavenging rights in the skeletal remains of once great cities and over the limited resources and remaining technology that litter the landscape. The initial release will cover Western North America, or what remains of it.

Our goal is for TW to be something drastically different from other massively-multiplayer online games and there are several ways we feel it will stand apart. Like I mentioned previously, capabilities that come with the Source engine and some of the player-driven modifications we’ll allow haven’t yet been seen in these games. Along with that will be squad-level mission zones for players who want an FPS adrenaline fix ;-) Of course, TW won’t be all flash; the story is epic and will unfold over the course of the game, involving the major survivor factions and the enemy of Mankind – the Skels, who are not out of the fight. There are many aspects of game play that together will provide realism and depth – an encumbrance system, skill-modified combat, item decay, trade-based economics, and use-driven character development. We’ll encourage exploration of the large and diverse world with vehicles and mounts, and we’ll keep a heroic feel to the game with our system of player “defeat.” We also plan on having a staff of GMs who do nothing but play characters to further the plot and make game play much less monotonous and predictable than other online role-playing games. We are also focusing a lot on game mechanics as they related to AI bots, which we will try to make much smarter than the standard MMORPG. There are other features that unfortunately have to be kept secret for a while :-X

Achieving all this won’t be easy, but we’re looking forward to the challenge!
