IGN has conducted an interview with Arena Programmer Jeff Strain about the technology behind the company's fantasy MMORPG 'Guild Wars'.There's a lot of MMOs. This is pretty clear. There are a few that stand out from the crowd for their licenses or franchises, but there are others that shouldn't be ignored. A couple of these titles are even trying whole new approaches to combat and gameplay style. One of these is Guild Wars, a game that promises a lot of action and strategy with minimal downtime.
One of the unique aspects of the game is its slick technological background. Technology that allows for streaming updates, better hacking protection and a 90KB client launch program deserves some attention. Having seen all of this working for ourselves, as many gamers did during the E3 for everyone demo, we just had to pry a little deeper into the ins and outs of their technology, what gave them the idea, and how the team's experience at other development houses like Blizzard helped in Guild Wars' creation.
ArenaNet's own Jeff Strain, co-founder and programmer, was nice enough to sit down and answer some of our questions about the new technology, what it does to make the game better, and how it's going to place Guild Wars a step above the competition. |
