An article at Starglade titled Player Count - The Telling Factor discusses the impact of shards and servers vs new single world designs:
The concept of having more than 1 player in a game goes back a long time. Most would agree it is far more enjoyable to play a game with a friend than with a computer. It is the social experience which counts. As technology developed, it became possible for increasing numbers of players to be able to interact with each other in games. With the advent of multi-user dungeons (MUDs) and massively-multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) it is now possible to have thousands of players online at once. EVE Online has had over 10,000 players connected simultaneously and games such as Wish and Dark and Light are promising upwards of tens of thousands of gamers in the same world.
