"Creating Starbases" is the title of the new Glimpse Inside at the official Earth And Beyond Website. Here is something from the article:
Building starbases presents unique challenges to Earth and Beyond's artists, but at the same time offers an opportunity for added creativity. The stations must have a sense of scale and immense proportion, but at the same time must show intricate details and fit within a polygon limit.
Any 3-D object created for the game is made up of a framework of polygons, with textures then laid on top. In order to keep the artwork from overloading players' systems, there is a limit of 1,500 to 3,200 polygons for each starbase.
An artist will typically spend a week creating a starbase. Before the 3-D artist begins a starbase, a concept artist has already created a general idea of how the station should look. The 3-D artists then take those ideas and build the stations. Four of Earth and Beyond's artists described some of the challenges they face.
Alan Blouin has created a few space stations, including a Recreation Station and a Terran station, and he explained the basics. |
