Jester News has done a review (you'll have to click through, they are running the site on frames) of Diablo 2 - Lord of Destruction and rated it 76% (one of the lowest scores I have seen so far. Here's a snip from their review:

LoD brings us a whole goodie-bag of new items, sets, and uniques to work with. Most items now also have a new form, elite, meaning they are the exceptional forms of some items, but even better. There are many new sets that allow more characters the skills bonuses that characters like the Necromancer and the Sorceress can get from sets or items, also found now are character specific items that can only be worn by a specific class, allowing for even more balancing of skill bonuses that made the magic-oriented characters stronger.

Also new in the expansion set is the new type of item found, the rune. Runes are in a sense like gems, but can bring many more bonuses than gems. Runes too can be socketed and included in the game are Rune recipes that when put in the exact order, in the exact kind of item give the item a unique status and bring a great many more bonuses than the runes alone would do.
