There is an interview with Randy Spong, Turbine Entertainment programmer and designer, about Asheron's Call 2 at C&VG. Here's an excerpt:
Players have greater interactivity with the environment in Asheron's Call 2 than they did in the first game. Could you go into this in greater detail? How does this enhance gameplay?
Spong: Thanks to the ability of both the client and the server to run our custom scripting language, we can allow players to trigger all kinds of interesting behaviour. A great example is the Workshops located in many of the towns of Dereth. Players can work near a Workshop for a bonus to their crafting skill.
But, if a player decides that the bonus he's getting is not enough, he can add fuel to the Workshop for even more added benefit. When the Workshop is at a high enough fuel level, it will actually have an enhanced appearance to reflect how well maintained it is.
This is a great way to allow players to feel that they really are making an impact in the game world, and a dynamic that is quite successful. The appearance system (and the interactivity that gives it so much flavour) also allows us to do really interesting things with our Quest dynamics, but you'll have to find out just what those things are for yourself! |
