Really this is a 4 game. Bad but not horrid. I vote 1 to counteract a ridiculous 10 review.
Ai wanders around aimlessly and doesnt build beyond its third level.
About to have you castle invaded? Just split your army in 4 groups and leave one kobold in your castle. The AI will run away.
This game was not completed, the developer went away. There were 30 mb of patches.
Dont buy this game. If you enjoyed the last homm game... youll hate this one.
Looks terrible also, they fired the graphic artist of the previous games and hired someone terrible. |

I absolutely loved HOMM 2 and 3 and various expansions. But IV sucks.
The combat is ridiculously bad even considering that they've added the heroes into the battle (a good thing imo).
It's hard to read the map for placement and the reputed movement numbers are virtually meaningless.
In the first case, I cannot relate how often I move a unit to X and watch it stop short or move past the target - leaving another unit to be shot.
In the second case, I've seen (way too many) battles where the likes of peasants control the movement while facing my much faster armies.
Then there is the fact that range units cannot shoot enemy units if another enemy is in the way. That's good, so why doesn't that apply to ranged magic as well?
Growth of characters seems theoretically improved as well because there are more options. But it isn't because the growth is way too limited and out of the player's hands.
Want to get nature magic and you're a general? Forget it - it won't happen.
Oh and the magic types are NOT balanced either. If you are a nature mage, you will defeat other types as long as you have a brain in your head.
Of course, if you want combat skills, they are always available to choose.
As to Gathering Storm, I got it (cheap) in the hopes they'd fixed the IV problems. Nope.
In fact there is a new one I find totally unacceptable. In the wizard (Noruss?) campaign I have to find a ferry summoning spell pointed at by the oracles' map.
Trouble is that there is no indication where the map can be found - no X marks the spot. I've tried to dig at every spot on the map even but because there is no physical marking on the map showing the digging, I cannot be sure I've gotten every spot.
Now perhaps there is a patch to fix that but please. What game should be impossible to complete without a patch?
And when I tried to get the download from 3Do? Well there were a series of errors that precluded that for over a week. I haven't been back.
The game sucks and I won't be buying any more HOMM until I actually play it first and see whether they returned to the days when the game was actually worth buying.
Does that answer your question, youdie? |
