DSC has written a preview of Dungeon Siege, peppered with a couple of nice screenshots from Gas Powered Games' soon to be published dungeon crawl. Here's a snippet for you:
Your character will develop without you even noticing it happen at the start. You start off with a very low Strength, Dexterity and Intelligence, but these soon increase. The more you fight with melee weapons, the higher your strength becomes and you increase in melee skill. Both of these increases will mean that you can hit harder and more accurately with melee weapons. The same goes for ranged weapons. The more arrows you fire (and hit the target with) the more proficient with the bow you become. Right at the start of the game it is probably best to make one choice: What do I want to kill things easiest with? Most people will prefer melee weapons (39% according to our poll) but it is wise to remember that you will have a crew of people to look after. You may want to be the medic of the group and not risk your own neck so you let others do the fighting. You may decide that you want to be up close and killing but you’d rather roast your enemies with magical fire rather than bash them silly with a stick. Indeed, you may choose zap enemies into the ground using natural electricity. The point is, is that the more you fight with one style of combat, the better you become at that style. I found it was best to keep at a good level of skill with all styles of fighting but to prefer one, because you never know when your wizard will die or your archer might fall.
